Bias and Discrimination in Algorithmic Decision-Making

The conference addresses the implications of the use of artificial intelligence in different areas of modern societies. It has a special focus on issues of fairness and equality, and on threats of algorithmic bias and wrongful discrimination, that are conjured up by the application of big data analysis and machine learning techniques. The conference takes an interdisciplinary view on these topics, including ethical assessments, legal viewpoints as well as concrete suggestions for technical solutions. It brings together international experts from the disciplines of philosophy, law and computer science to promote interdisciplinary exchange and develop new perspectives on the impact of artificial intelligence on future societies.

Invited Speakers:

Atoosa Kasirzadeh (University of Edinburgh)
John Danaher (University of Galway)
Raphaële Xenidis (Sciences Po Law School)
Gianclaudio Malgieri (Leiden University)
Toon Calders (University of Antwerp)
Symeon Papadopoulos (Centre for Research & Technology Hellas)

BIAS is an interfaculty research initiative funded by Volkswagenstiftung and composed of experts from philosophy, law, and computer science, bringing together epistemological and ethical, legal and technical perspectives. Our shared research question is: How can we ensure that big data analysis and algorithm-based decision-making are unbiased and nondiscriminatory?

The conference is an in-person only event free of charge but registration by 31st of March is required. Please use the registration form accessible below.
